Ocean Exchange Neptune Award Application Checklist for Founders

An Ocean Exchange Neptune Award application checklist should cover six things: a one-sentence commercial problem, proof the product works in real conditions, customer conversations, a use-of-funds plan, your regional deadline, and a drafted pitch. Ocean Exchange has closed its 2026 call for solutions, so treat this list as preparation for the next cycle.

What Should an Ocean Exchange Neptune Award Application Checklist Include?

According to the Ocean Exchange registration page, the 2026 program announced three non-dilutive Neptune Awards of $100,000 USD each, judged on Innovation, Impact and Execution. Non-dilutive means you receive the money without giving up equity. Build your checklist around those three words.

  • State the commercial problem in one sentence that a non-specialist delegate could repeat.
  • Document the product working in real conditions, including what failed and what you changed.
  • Name the customers or operators you have spoken with and what they told you.
  • Explain what the award money would pay for and which milestone it unlocks.
  • Confirm the deadline for your region, because Ocean Exchange states that deadlines vary regionally.
  • Check whether the Florida Environmental Impact Awards also apply to your solution.
  • Draft the finalist pitch before you submit, so the written entry and the stage story match.

How Do Innovation, Impact and Execution Map to Your Evidence?

Innovation and Impact are the easier two to write. Execution is where marine hardware and software companies tend to be thinnest, because a product that works in a lab has not yet met salt, vibration and traditional operators. The table pairs each criterion with the evidence we would gather first.

CriterionWhat to have readyCommon gap
InnovationA plain description of what is new and what it replacesDescribing the technology without the problem it solves
ImpactA clear link to the ocean or waterway outcome, in Ocean Exchange's terms of understanding the ocean and minimizing our impact on its resourcesClaiming benefit with no measurement plan
ExecutionField-test records, customer conversations, a milestone plan for the fundsA prototype that has only run in controlled conditions

Ocean Exchange's awards page describes the Neptune Awards as going to solutions that advance our understanding of the ocean and help minimize our impact on its resources. Its separate MEOPAR-Ocean Exchange Neptune Award page lists what that sibling award evaluates: ocean impact, innovation, team, ability to scale, customer research, and understanding of the value proposition. That is not the Neptune rubric, but customer research and a clear value proposition are a sensible reference for Execution.

Which Ocean Exchange Award Does Your Checklist Serve?

Founders sometimes prepare for the wrong track. This comparison uses the amounts and eligibility Ocean Exchange published for 2026.

AwardWho it was open to in 2026Amount
Ocean Exchange Neptune AwardSolutions worldwideThree awards of $100,000 USD each
Florida Environmental Impact AwardSolutions worldwide that demonstrate applicability to FloridaTwo awards of $50,000 USD each
Ocean Exchange Collegiate AwardStudent-led, earlier-stage companies in North AmericaSeveral $10,000 USD awards, including Oceaneering and Guy Harvey Foundation awards
Florida Ocean Economy Collegiate AwardFlorida students only, new for 2026$10,000 USD
MEOPAR-Ocean Exchange Neptune AwardCanadian innovators working on ocean data and artificial intelligenceCAD$100,000

Ocean Exchange states that eligible applicants may be considered for both a Neptune Award and a Florida Environmental Impact Award. If your team is still based in a university lab, our guide to the Ocean Exchange Collegiate Award is the better starting point, and our comparison of the Neptune Award or Collegiate Award helps you choose.

How Does the Florida Angle Strengthen an Application?

The Florida Environmental Impact Awards ask applicants to demonstrate applicability to Florida, so say specifically how your solution applies. Florida Atlantic University hosts the Florida Office of the Ocean Economy, a state-supported effort to understand, support and grow ocean- and coastal-based industries, including maritime transportation, coastal construction, seafood production and ocean technology. If your product touches ports, working waterfronts, coastal infrastructure or seafood, name the setting and the operator who would use it.

What Can You Do While the Call Is Closed?

Ocean Exchange points applicants to its socials for updates on finalists, winners and future awards, and it has not posted a next deadline on the pages we reviewed. That leaves time to close the gaps in the checklist. The Ocean Exchange event runs October 25-27 in Fort Lauderdale, which is still ahead of today, so attending is one way to see how finalists present before you write your own entry.

  • Run another field test and keep the log, failures included.
  • Hold a few conversations with operators and write down their objections.
  • Cost out a milestone the award money would fund.
  • Rehearse the pitch with someone outside your field.

Where Does Founding Blue Fit?

We help Florida founders prepare Ocean Exchange applications and refine the pitch they give to delegates. We do not run, judge, fund or guarantee any award, grant or investment. An award is one step on our capital staircase, so we pair application work with planning around non-dilutive funding for ocean tech startups and with pitching ocean tech investors in Florida. For the process end to end, read how Ocean Exchange works for South Florida founders, or ask us about application support through our contact page.

FAQ

Is the Neptune Award a Grant or an Investment?

It is described as non-dilutive money. MSME Africa's call for applications also describes three non-dilutive awards of $100,000 USD each.

Can a company outside Florida apply?

Yes for the Neptune Award, which Ocean Exchange opened to solutions worldwide. The Florida Environmental Impact Awards require that the solution demonstrate applicability to Florida.

Did the 2026 Collegiate Award Deadline Pass?

Yes. The Canadian Neptune deadline was August 7.

What did earlier Neptune winners look like?

Ocean Exchange's 2022 winners page shows the 2022 Neptune Award went to a Tanzanian company that converts organic waste into a non-animal protein source for aquaculture feeds. The point for your checklist is that a defined problem and a working process stood behind the win.

What should the use-of-funds section say?

Tie the money to one named milestone, such as a longer on-water trial with documented failures, and say what that trial will prove to the operators who would buy the product.
